Later that year, it was released as a book by D. Appleton & Company. It won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, making Wharton the first woman to win the prize.

    The innocence Wharton recalled in her novel was as much about the sexual propriety and financial rectitude of her parents' age as it was about their aversion to the uglier side of life.
